Dostoevskij’s Russia, Brothers Karamazov and Uspenskij

Author of The White Nights, from which the famous film by Luchino Visconti with Marcello Mastroianni. Author also of other monumental works: The demons, The idiot, Brothers Karamazov, are the most important novels from which films were taken from Akira Kurosawa and more recently from Netflix in the series Castelvania.

By geographical association we speak of Russian literature because we like to travel around the world with literature. Dostoevskij has a Taoist wisdom declined in a Christian Orthodox way, far from the European Christian pietism and closer to the Tao and geographically bordering on China (of course, there is also a European Russia!): It is the largest country in the world and feels. It’s not a case if Kurosawa brought many film from Dostoevskij’s subjects.

Dostoevskij is also thinkable as a philosopher in his Brothers Karamazov, where he combines the great theater with the social drama due to the absence of his father. Theme and setting that he shares with the successful anime series Netflix Castelvania. But philosophy that shares instead with another Russian scholar Uspenskij, with his Fragments, as I said, is closer to a Tao wisdom, than to Christianity understood as pietism.

However, there is the theatrical entertainment part of Dostoevsky, which he shares with the Castelvania series: and how can he not entertain a thing like children who want to kill their father and vice versa? (In the case of Castelvania the father is Dracula himself). Dostoevskij himself says this in the preface to the Brothers Karamazov: “this is an entertainment book”.
He was a seeker of the truth and a lover of the theater. In contradiction, but as Carmelo Bene teaches us, it is not so.
